A multimedia infotainment system with 30-gigabyte hard drive and navigation system is available.

At first impression, the 2012 Jeep Liberty feels relatively well laid-out—as well as airy, given the tall greenhouse. Seats feel skimpy, though, and don’t offer much support. But there’s enough space in back, even for adults on a weekend trip, for instance. And the story is pretty good if you plan to haul cargo and gear: The cargo floor is low, too, and the seats fold neatly.

But there’s still plenty to make the Liberty an unappealing choice in today’s market, which is brimming with well-designed, family-friendly utility vehicles. The Liberty’s on-the-road ride and refinement are probably the biggest turn-offs of this vehicle. There’s a fair amount more interior road and wind noise than in more carlike compact crossover vehicles. And as a tall, narrow vehicle with a pitchy ride, the Liberty results in lots of ‘head toss’ on rough roads, or even choppy freeways, and blemished road surfaces seem to upset the composure of occupants just as much as they seem to upset the Liberty’s grip.

Safety features are respectable in the 2012 Liberty, but the federal government hasn’t tested it under the new ratings system, and the IIHS gave it a worrisome ‘marginal’ in side impact and ‘acceptable’ in rear impact. Base Sport, more luxurious Limited, and new Limited Jet trims are offered. Limited Jet models offer a spiced-up appearance, with big 20-inch aluminum wheels, chrome molding, and other black and bright trim throughout, plus a leather-wrapped steering wheel and alarm system. Limited models are dressed up with a a long list of equipment over the sport, including leather upholstery, heated front seats, steering-wheel audio controls, a Bluetooth hands-free interface, and a garage-door opener. There are plenty of cool options, such as a music hard drive system, a new Garmin nav system, rain-sensing wipers, and a Sky Slider sunroof, if you don’t mind the higher price tag.

In most corners, the exit is at the top of the foot down and not lift, and this is where Jeep is really alive. Rear diff started to work as soon as you add throttle and did not stop until you pick up or straighten the wheels. The new 3.6-liter V6 is all-aluminum, so it weighs more than 90 pounds less then the old cast-iron block 3.8-liter V6. The new engine is 94 mm shorter as well. That may not sound like much, but it helped engineers package an improved, higher-flow intake system. It also allowed Jeep’s engineers to raise the alternator, so the 2012 Wrangler can ford deeper water.

It’s difficult to accurately gauge the dramatic improvement in acceleration from this new V6 without sampling the previous model at the same time. So we took twin 2011 and 2012 automatic-equipped Wranglers out for a test drive. The results were dramatic. We got both Jeeps up to about 30 mph and then pinned the throttle simultaneously. The old Wrangler falls behind the new one as if it were saddled with a heavy trailer. And from a dead stop in a foot-to-the-floor drag race, the new Wrangler pulls away. Jeep says it’s a 25 percent improvement in 0–60 acceleration. We believe them.

Track improvements aside, you can’t properly test a Wranger without getting it a little dirty. So we convoyed a group of 2012 Wranglers from Lake Tahoe to the head of the famed Rubicon trail for two days of four wheeling. The heavy snowfall and recent snowmelt made the trail more difficult. Crawling up wet rocks, the Jeeps would slide around, hunt for traction and sometimes slam hard onto their skidplates as a tire would slip from a rock. Each Jeep in our group was a Rubicon model, with locking differentials, a front swaybar disconnect, low gearing and aggressive tires. Still, the progress was slow. We made less than a half a mile per hour as we snaked the Jeeps through incredibly tight boulder fields, powered out of mudholes and waded through doorsill-deep pools of water.

In our Compass, this was paired with the disappointing continuously variable transmission, which had us wishing for the standard-equipment manual gearbox. Jeep also offers a 2.0-liter four-cylinder on front-drive models, but with only 158 hp and 141 lb-ft of torque, it promises to feel at least as underpowered as the larger engine. While getting the Compass moving is not the problem – its throttle response and initial acceleration is decent enough – once you hit highway speeds (greater than 45 mph), the vehicle is painfully slow to respond. Even when the CVT pegs the tachometer, you’ll experience more volume than motion.

Despite the lack of refinement under its hood, the Compass could still be an endearing choice when shopped against other compact crossovers – until you crunch the numbers on size. This area is paramount among shoppers in the segment, most of which are looking for that magical combination of roominess, cargo capacity, big mpg numbers and low MSRP. Among the price-competitive set – which includes the Honda CR-V, Hyundai Tucson, Nissan Rogue, Toyota RAV4, and Subaru Forester – the Compass is just too small to make up for its shortcomings. Save for rear legroom, the Compass trails in the important measurements of roominess, and its rear cargo capacity is the lowest by a healthy three cubic feet. The class of this class – the CR-V and Subaru Forester – offer over 10 cubic feet more cargo capacity behind their rear seats.

The controller features haptic feedback when rolling over on-screen controls, allowing the user to “feel” the buttons. We found this system to be immediately intuitive and easier to use than other competing interfaces.

Rear passengers will find the seating roomy and comfortable thanks to reclining and sliding adjustments. Luggage and cargo space are accommodating as well, allowing up to 40 cubic feet behind the 40/20/40-split-folding rear seats and 80 cubes with them stowed.

Driving Impressions

The 2012 Lexus RX 450h doesn’t disappoint when it comes to a smooth ride. The compliant suspension and plentiful sound insulation ably isolate passengers from the outside world. The hybrid powertrain is also pretty silent, though at full throttle the V6 does make a surprising amount of noise. The softly sprung suspension never feels uncontrolled, but it’s far from athletic.

The RX 450h is capable of approaching 30 mph in electric-only mode, which improves fuel economy, especially in stop-and-go traffic. An “EV” mode is also at the driver’s command, which allows electric-only propulsion at low speeds over short distances.

All variations of the LS sedan feature very recent exterior styling featuring a revised front fascia, headlamps, and taillamps. In the case of the LS 600h L model, the front fascia will get a unique treatment in the LS line to help distinguish its greener attributes in the form of a chrome grill similar to the Lexus HS 250h hybrid.

The recently updated LS 600h L features upgrades over the previous model that include a larger usable trunk space due to a reconfigured battery pack as well as new telematics, USB connectivity and updated navigation.

Traction and stability control, anti-lock brakes, electronic brake force distribution, brake assist and 10 airbags are of course standard. The power steering is electrical and high-intensity discharge (HID) headlights with dynamic auto leveling are included.

In addition to the active safety features, the LS 600h L is standard-equipped with eight airbags, with a maximum of 11 airbags available through option packages. Convertibles generally place little emphasis on rear seat comfort, and the IS 350 C is no different. With one of the smallest backseats in its class, space is at a premium for even the smallest of passengers. As with most retractable hardtops, trunk space is significantly reduced when the top is stowed. At its maximum, the trunk offers a decent capacity of 10.8 cubic feet. With the top folded, that figure drops to a puny 2.4 cubes. Fortunately, what remaining space there is will still accommodate a golf bag.

Driving Impressions

Top up or down, the 2012 Lexus IS 350 C delivers high levels of refinement. The body structure proves free of shake and shimmy even when you’re driving over rough pavement, and the folding hardtop provides impressive isolation from highway wind noise. Acceleration is significantly quicker than its IS 250 C twin, so for drivers who desire more lively performance, the IS 350 C is the obvious choice.

The soft suspension and lifeless steering are tuned more for comfort than spirited handling, but the optional F Sport dealer accessory parts are able to add some spice to the mix.

The six-speed Aisin Warner auto transmission occasionally gets lost for a moment when you are just cruising. The chassis setup is biased towards on-road ride and handling, but there’s enough suspension to handle a bumpy ascent, and the new speed-adjustable descent control will ensure you make it back down safely.

The dual-view screen on the center console uses the Parallax Barrier Technology first introduced on the 2010 Range Rover. It allows the driver and passenger to view different images on the same screen based on their viewing angle. So while the passenger watches TV or a DVD, the driver sees navigation information. It works really well. Dual-view screens are still banned in the U.S., but Land Rover says it plans to challenge that rule.

Try as they might, even the motor industry’s best engineering teams are struggling to match the steering feel and feedback of a good hydraulic setup with the latest generation of electronically assisted steering systems. The Evoque’s is good but imperfect. Oh, and those back seats are pretty cramped, especially in the three-door “coupe,” which has a lower roofline. Placed on a mantel, the jewel-like taillamps would look like modern art. We also love the glittering switches and dials on the facia borrowed from more expensive Range Rover models.

Inspired by the wartime U.S. Jeep, the original Land Rover was a boxy utility device. That all changed in 1970, when the little British automaker launched the world’s first luxury SUV, the Range Rover. Now Land Rover is trying to change the game again with this new baby version. There’s a real buzz about the 4×4 Evoque, and for good reason: It’s a small SUV that feels big and luxurious and drives like an all-weather European sports coupe. The Range Rover’s good looks are at the heart of the car’s appeal, so we have to credit Gerry McGovern’s design team for managing to keep the proportions of the 2008 LRX concept car. The Evoque is intended to attract a new range of younger, urban buyers. With a dazzling design and great handling, the Evoque has a good chance of doing just that.

If you don’t like the scissor style doors you can opt for the Roadster edition instead. The latter has more horsepower than the 640 LP configuration. For the latter vehicle, move now, there are only fifty being made.

Look up the word “Murcielago” in the dictionary, and you’ll find the following definition: “To arrive with all the subtlety of Pamela Anderson in a Saran Wrap bikini. To humiliate the weak. To own any valet stand.” Fire up the V-12, and suddenly you won’t care that: (a) you can barely see anything behind you, (b) to back up you’ll need a spotter, (c) climbing out can make you look like a circus clown.

Few automobiles on earth run like this one. The “regular” LP 640 scorches to 60 mph in less than 3.5 seconds. The SV can do it in just 3.2. Top speed, claims Lamborghini, is well north of 200 mph (211 mph for the SV). Maximum grip hovers around 1.0 g, and the Murcielago is far lighter on its feet than its size might suggest. The Roadster adds a measure of security with rollover bars that automatically deploy if the car begins to turn turtle. Otherwise, the safety extras are minimal (no side air bags, no stability control).

2011 Koenigsegg Agera R Spec Price Review

The Agera R is to the Agera what the CCXR is to the CCX. If that statement means nothing to you, then think of the Agera R as a more environmentally friendly and more powerful version of the base Agera. Using the beneficial qualities of E85 biofuel, including a higher octane rating and cooling abilities, the engine can run with higher compression, boost pressure, and more spark advance compared to the normal engine.

The result is a Veryon Super Sport-comparable 1,100 hp on E85 biofuel and peak torque of 885 lb-ft. of torque from its in-house 5.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 engine. But wait, doesn’t the CCX and the Agera use a 4.7-liter V-8? Well, Koenigsegg has also taken this time to announce the new 5.0-liter V-8 that the company will be utilizing in the base Agera and Agera R.

Koenigsegg says that the Agera R utilizes a particularly robust engine capable of withstanding extreme pressures. Utilizing a purely theoretical tool called Brake Mean Effective Pressure (BMEP), Koenigsegg says the Agera has a BMEP rating of 406 psi on 95 octane and 435 psi on E85 biofuel. The best production engines from other leading manufacturers have a maximum BMEP of around 319 psi. The Agera’s turbochargers have a maximum pressure of 22 psi.

A newly developed seven-speed gearbox for the Agera features dual clutches for very smooth, yet extremely fast shifts. The Agera also makes use of what Koenigsegg calls one of the lightest and fastest E-Differentials on the market. The E-Diff takes into account the throttle angle, g-forces on the car, steering wheel angle, yaw angle, car speed, engine rpm, selected gear, and weather conditions. It also works in harmony with the new traction control system that Koenigsegg says is the fastest reacting in the industry.

The aerodynamics of the Agera are top notch. Even with the massive rear wing in place, the coefficient of drag is 0.33 in high-speed mode and 0.37 in track mode. The dynamic rear wing will alter its position not only because of the car’s speed, but also depending on pressure of the wind. It can thus compensate for headwind or tailwind at the same given speed. Koenigsegg says the Agera R has a “theoretical” top speed of around 273 mph, given the car’s gear ratios, aerodynamics, and power. All Agera models are limited to 230 mph in standard mode, but the governor can be unlocked if all necessary conditions are met (tire wear, service level of car, etc) in the infotainment system.

A large 21-gallon fuel tank is centrally located into the carbon fiber monocoque chassis to help the Agera pass the U.S. high-speed rear impact test. So, yes, the Agera, unlike the CCX, will be marketed and sold inside the United States without any special alterations or show car licenses. Another benefit of the fuel tank’s position is that the weight distribution of the Agera does not change if the tank is full or close to empty.

Koenigsegg has paid particular attention to the Agera’s luggage space to allow the owner to hold his or her luggage or for the easy stowage of the one-piece roof/hardtop. Like the Acura NSX and unlike the umbrella in the Veyron Grand Sport, the Agera will easily convert from open-top roadster to closed coupe mid-trip while still being able to handle a set of golf clubs.

The particular Agera R pictured production car number 83 has been tailored for a specific customer. It includes a Speed Racer theme for the exterior and a custom-made roof box. Its custom Michelin tires, according to Koenigsegg, achieve lateral accelerations up to 1.6 g in dry conditions and are rated for speeds over 260 mph, making them the highest top-speed rated tire in the world.

The front seats are nicely contoured and offer good comfort, with adequate headroom and legroom. The 60/40-split rear seat is set up for three passengers, but it’s tight enough that it’s just passable for a couple of adults. The fact that this seat lacks the ability to recline and slide fore and aft as they do in many competitors is a weak point.

The interior’s other major shortcoming is its relative lack of cargo space compared to some other small crossover SUVs. Behind the rear seats are just 26.1 cubic feet of space, which grows to 54.6 cubic feet with the rear seatbacks laid flat. To put that last number in perspective, that makes it about 15 cubic feet smaller than the cargo holds of both the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4.

Driving Impressions

While the 2012 Kia Sportage is by no means a tall four-door sports car, it’s still relatively fun to drive. The 2.4-liter engine gives it enough get-up-and-go to be interesting and the six-speed automatic transmission works well in both fully automatic and manual shift modes. The turbocharged engine is energetic, though its impressive fuel economy numbers are predicated on your being conservative with the throttle.

2011 Maserati Granturismo Convertible Spec Price Review

One of the few aftermarket specialists to tweak the Maserati brand, Novitec Tridente has announced a new package for the GranTurismo Convertible, which is known as the GranCabrio outside North America. Like the modifications for the GranTurismo coupe, the package draws forth 590 hp by way of a supercharger, new programming for the car’s ECU, and new exhaust piping. Novitec Tridente also adds a custom intake manifold and larger fuel injectors.

In stock form, the 4.7-liter V-8 engine produces a stout 433 hp and 361 lb-ft of torque. With the supercharger pushing five pounds of boost and a water-to-air intercooler in place, those figures jump by 161 hp and 61 lb-ft, respectively. The newfound power is transferred through the car’s standard six-speed automatic transmission. Despite having to move nearly 4,400 pounds of heft, the car is able to muster zero-to-62-mph sprints in just 4.5 seconds. Top speed increases from the standard 176 to 187 mph.

The engine conversion costs 19,900 Euros, excluding the sport exhaust. The stainless-steel system features four 3.5-inch tubes and is available with or without control flaps, which allow the driver to subdue or open up the exhaust pipes (dupontregistry).

The refinements do not stop at the engine compartment; Novitec Tridente also adds three-piece rims with diameters of 21 and 22 inches and a height-adjustable coilover suspension. The car is fitted with fitted with Pirelli P Zero high-performance tires in size 255/30ZR-21 at the front and size 315/25ZR-22 at the rear. The suspension can be calibrated for both height and rebound. To better navigate speed bumps or ramps, a hydraulic system will raise the vehicle by 1.6 inches at the press of a button. Upon reaching a speed of 50 mph, the suspension automatically lowers.

Carbon fiber trim pieces, which are also available for the GranTurismo coupe, enhance the car’s aerodynamic properties and add a little visual flair. Two front lips attach to both sides of the production apron. Their shape reduces lift on the front axle, improving stability at high speeds. A trunk lip and a diffuser for the stock bumper also aid the car’s aerodynamics. All body components are made from carbon fiber with a clear-coated finish. They can be painted in the same color as the body or a contrasting color per request.

The Lotus Evora features a swept-forward cabin design and an integrated rear spoiler that is not only functional but also adds to the styling of the car. The elegant interior is designed to enhance both driver and passenger comfort with leather trimmed Recaro sport seats and a flat-bottomed lightweight magnesium leather-trimmed steering wheel.

Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options
The 2011 Lotus Evora is a four-seat sports car that is offered in base and Evora S trim levels.

Standard equipment includes cast-aluminum wheels, bi-xenon headlights, heated exterior mirrors, air-conditioning, leather-upholstered front seats, cloth-upholstered rear seats, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, power windows, a leather-wrapped gearshift knob and handbrake, a trip computer and a CD/MP3 player with iPod integration and auxiliary audio jack.

There are three main option groups available. The Premium package adds accent lighting, a center armrest, heated front seats, premium floor mats and leather trim throughout the cabin. The Evora S receives more power thanks to its supercharged engine, and the powertrain also features an exhaust bypass valve that opens in Sport mode, a heavy-duty clutch and a close-ratio transmission. Also included are all the items from the Sport package along with a sportier suspension tune and a more aggressive rear aero diffuser.


Powertrains and Performance
The 2011 Lotus Evora is powered by a mid-mounted 3.5-liter Toyota V6 that produces 276 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The only standard transmission is a traditional six-speed manual, with a push-button six-speed automatic with shift paddles available as an option. The Evora S gains a supercharger and increases power output to 345 hp and 295 lb-ft or torque.

Lotus estimates the 0-60-mph run at around 4.9 seconds for the base Evora, with a stated top speed of 162 mph. The Evora S should hit 60 mph in 4.6 seconds and top out at 172 mph. Just as impressive as the performance numbers is the fuel efficiency; the Evora is expected to achieve 17 mpg city/27 mpg highway for the standard manual, while the sport gearbox should get 1 mpg more in the city.

The 2010 Lotus Evora is noticeably sparse when it comes to safety equipment. Antilock brakes and traction/stability control are included, but no type of side airbags are available.

Interior Design and Special Features
The Evora’s interior is quite a departure from the hard-core sports cars in the Lotus lineup, sporting a modern cockpit with rich leather surfaces, carpeting and significantly more creature comforts than what’s offered in the Elise and Exige. The relatively few knobs and buttons are within easy reach and are elegantly styled and placed.

Entry and exit from the front seats are much more civilized than in the Elise or Exige, thanks to a shorter and narrower side sill and larger door openings. Once seated, there is significantly more space up front — enough to comfortably accommodate 6-foot-plus adults. Unfortunately, though, the front wheelwell intrudes on foot space. As a result, the clutch pedal is shifted an inch or so to the right, which can be awkward for some drivers. We had bigger issues with the lack of a functional dead pedal, however. A small ledge that can only fit a few toes is all that is provided, and its placement is painfully uncomfortable.

The rear seats don’t fare any better, and are really no more than an upholstered package shelf with seatbelts. Rear space is almost nonexistent, and may even be uncomfortable for small children. In a pinch, these seats might come in handy, but we’d probably opt for the rear-seat delete. Rear visibility is laughable, but fortunately, a rearview camera is available as an option. As for the trunk, Lotus claims the Evora can hold up to 5.7 cubic feet but its narrow shape drastically limits what you can store back there. Strangely enough, the Elise’s trunk, which can hold only 4.0 cubes, more easily accommodates bulkier items because of its wider shape.

Driving Impressions
The 2011 Lotus Evora is most at home on tight, twisting roads. Like its smaller Elise and Exige cousins, the Evora knifes through turns with uncommon precision and otherworldly levels of grip. Unlike the Elise, however, the Evora provides a relatively serene cabin with few squeaks and rattles, plenty of sound insulation and a suspension that reduces pothole effects to “normal” car standards.

Power is plentiful throughout the rev range and the transmission features well-spaced gears to make the most of the V6′s output. Steering feel is as good as it gets for any car, and the power steering makes maneuvering in tight spots effortless.

Is that the tribe can now be accessed from the car, rather than relying solely on the keychain to be unlocked. All changes to the minutes to add a four-percent reduction in the Elise’s drag coefficient and, more importantly, an excessive maturation of his form. Most of us regret this change, although some might suggest that the Elise is now appealing to a wider audience.

The Exige S now carries a new front splitter that reveals a cleaner line across the front of the car and a smaller rear spoiler, both of which still improve the vehicle’s aerodynamics.

Electric Trains. Exige engine equipped with a supercharged 3.5-liter 24 valve V6, which is committed to produce power 345 hp (350 ps, ??257.5 KW, 3456 cc) @ 7000 rpm and £ 400-ft of torque at 4,500 rpm Nm / 295. Eaton machines use TV technology to deliver this power.

Drive is sent directly back through a six-speed transmission manually. Top speed 170mph (274 km / h), Exige is 00-60 (100 km / h) at 3.8 seconds and can reach 160mph at 7.8 seconds mark.

Prior to the recession and volatile gas prices, the Lincoln Navigator was a seductive poster child for conspicuous consumption. While large, flashy SUVs have lost most of their hip-hop allure in these more modest days, vehicles like the 2012 Lincoln Navigator still have their place.

Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options

The 2012 Lincoln Navigator is a full-size luxury SUV offered in two sizes: regular and extended-wheelbase Navigator L. Both models have three-row, seven-passenger seating. The second-row bucket seats can be replaced with a three-person 40/20/40-split bench that increases seating capacity to eight.

On the upside, the 2012 Lincoln Navigator offers one of the most accommodating interiors in the segment. Seating comfort is excellent, and the seats make way for cargo with ease. The second row folds down manually, but the power-folding third-row seat is easily stowed, opening up a flat load floor. (You must physically remove an Escalade’s third row.) The base Navigator holds a respectable 104 cubic feet of cargo. The longer Navigator L, thanks to its additional space behind the rear seats, offers a generous 128 cubic feet of cargo storage, and the extra length helps with access to the third-row seat when powered back to the up position.

The voice-operated Sync system is particularly useful; among other functions, it allows you to control your cell phone and iPod (or other MP3 player) without removing your hands from the steering wheel. And now the AppLink adds voice-command capability to select smartphone applications, and you can use apps like Pandora for your favorite music. Unfortunately, the Navigator’s small touchscreen isn’t as useful or user-friendly as the electronics interfaces found in competitor vehicles.

Driving Impressions

The 2012 Lincoln Navigator delivers what’s expected from a luxury vehicle: a supple ride quality and a hushed cabin that largely insulates its passengers from the outside world. Alas, it also exhibits the flaws of such a big SUV, with noticeable trucklike body roll in sharp turns. And since the Navigator L measures almost 19 feet long, it can be a handful in tight parking situations with its 44-foot turning circle. The regular-wheelbase model isn’t much better.

Acceleration seems satisfactory until you compare it to its significantly gutsier competition or fill it to the brim with people and gear. Ford’s 5.4-liter V8 never was the most spirited truck engine on the market, and towing a full load just reinforces the Navigator’s most glaring shortcoming.

Originally name the Zephyr for 2006, it was designed to appeal to a new generation of buyers, while still delivering the comfort and refinement expected of a Lincoln. Classic Lincoln design elements include a waterfall grille positioned between quad projector-beam headlights, while the interior features high-quality leather and real wood or aluminum trim. All aspects of the chassis, including spring rates, shocks, and bushings have been tuned for a comfortable ride while still retaining precise responsive handling.

The 2012 Lincoln MKZ’s passenger cabin gets some nice feature upgrades and better materials than those found in its Ford Fusion cousin. That said, the interior seems more like something you’d find on a top-of-the-line mainstream sedan than a car meant to compete with European luxury marques like Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

On the upside, the seats are comfortable and both front and rear seat passengers enjoy a good amount of head- and legroom. Out back is an equally generously sized trunk, with 16.9 cubic feet of cargo capacity in the base model; the Hybrid has only 11.8 cubic feet, due to the battery pack that intrudes into the trunk space.

The MKZ’s range of available technology is another positive here, especially the navigation system’s Sirius Travel Link service. Audiophiles will also want to make sure to give the excellent THX surround-sound system a listen.

Driving Impressions

Behind the wheel, the 2012 Lincoln MKZ is perfectly competent, if not very exciting, which makes it a good match for buyers looking for a quiet and comfortable luxury sedan. The V6 offers decent acceleration, though the exhaust note lacks the throaty growl of some of its competitors. The Hybrid provides relatively brisk performance as well as composed handling that’s similar to that of the non-hybrid version.

Add the sport-tuned suspension and 18-inch wheels that come with the available Sport Appearance package (not available on the Hybrid), however, and things get a bit more interesting. In fact, the MKZ becomes downright fun to drive. The trade-off to this firmer suspension setup, of course, is a rough ride that doesn’t feel particularly Lincoln-esque.

Offered in either 6- or 7-passenger configurations, a second-row 60/40 split folding bench seat with heated outboard seating positions is standard. The MKT EcoBoost receives a more muscular twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 making 355 hp and 350 lb-ft. A six-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel-drive system are standard. Estimated EPA fuel economy is 16 mpg city/21 mpg highway and 18 mpg combined. In Edmunds performance testing, the MKT EcoBoost accelerates from zero to 60 mph in 6.3 seconds, a swift result for this segment.

The 2012 Lincoln MKT comes standard with electronic stability control, antilock disc brakes, front seat side-impact airbags and side curtain airbags that cover all three rows.

The Collision Warning with Brake Support system comes as part of the optional adaptive cruise control. This system flashes a warning on the windshield when sensors detect slower-moving traffic ahead and then pre-charges the brake system to reduce braking distances for an ensuing panic stop. In a panic stop during Edmunds testing, the MKT slowed from 60 to zero in an acceptable distance of 127 feet.

Other useful safety features include a rearview camera, a blind spot monitor and a Cross Traffic Alert system. Interior Design and Special Features
The MKT’s interior is available in six- or seven-passenger configurations, and either way offers handsome styling and upscale materials including leather upholstery and genuine wood trim. The optional six-passenger configuration trades the 60/40-split second-row bench for a pair of sliding captain’s chairs that increases legroom for third-row passengers. Add the second-row center console with refrigerator and headrest-mounted DVD screens and you’re traveling in limo-class luxury.

The standard two-passenger third row is not nearly as enjoyable a place to be, because the headroom is compromised by the sloping roof line. Buyers looking for maximum seating capacity should check the Buick Enclave, which offers room for up to eight passengers, or even the Ford Flex, which has enough room for 6-footers. The MKT offers up 76 cubic feet of maximum cargo space, which is competitive, though below average for a large luxury crossover.

Driving Impressions
As large luxury people movers go, the 2012 Lincoln MKT is a pleasure to drive. Steering feels reasonably responsive whether assisted by hydraulic or electric power steering, the latter found on the EcoBoost model. The suspension delivers the refined ride quality expected of a luxury vehicle and very respectable handling, although the MKT’s size and weight make it anything but sporting. The MKT EcoBoost V6 provides plenty of acceleration at virtually any speed, thanks in part to the six-speed automatic transmission’s smooth shifts.

The new EcoBoost engine gives the MKS 355 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque, a sizable bump from the stock and naturally aspirated 3.7-liter V6 that provides 82 fewer horsepower.

The EcoBoost drivetrain includes all-wheel drive, and obtains 17 city, 25 highway miles per gallon.

Also new for 2012 is HD Radio when the navigation system is ticked off the option list, along with an expansion of Sync features to include Traffic, Directions and information.
The MKS is built on the same basic D3 architecture as the new Ford Taurus, which was in turn derived from a Volvo platform. The overall look is meant to draw on design elements from vehicles as old as the 1941 Lincoln Zephyr, without looking retro.

Ford’s management reportedly decided to make changes to the design of the MKS based on positive feedback following the debut of the MKR. Compared to the MKS concept, the taillights appear to have become slightly taller and narrower. The headlights end at a less sharp point than on the concept, but remain true to the design language set out by the show car. Faced with aggressive styling from the likes of Cadillac, this was probably a wise decision.

Base power comes from a 3.7-liter engine V6 that delivers 273 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque. Both engines come with a six-speed automatic transmission. This engine can be had in either front-wheel drive, or AWD, with mileage ranging from 17 city, 24 highway, to 16 city, 23 highway with AWD.
